our Weapons were Our instruments

Calling all citizens, artivists and conscious souls seated in Durban. This Wednesday, there’s two moments to connect with a very special individual, Dror Feiler. This ‘Refusenik’ (Israeli conscientious objector) will be interrogating the links between activism and art, as well as a live performance Tuesday evening (today) at the Center for Jazz and Popular Music, at the University.

The two events on Wednesday are workshop spaces, the first at DUT, and the second a poetry/storytelling workshop at the BAT Center at 3.30pm , focusing on ‘Where/how does the global ‘politic’ fit into our African cultural expressions?’. The DUT event, which starts at noon/12, engages with the art/activism relationship, asking “How can we as practising and aspiring artists engage in socio-political issues? Why is this important?” Both workshops are open to the public and not limited to people who call themselves ‘artists’ Or ‘activists’.

This is also a chance to meet a survivor of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla (see video below), an art activist and musician creating the platform for us as creatives, to reflect and recognise our place in the world as artists, creatives and citizens of the EarthShip.
